Tuition Policy Update
It is my great pleasure, on behalf of the board of trustees and all the administration at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine, to inform you of a policy decision that I believe will benefit and excite many of you as much as it did all of us here at the COM.
We are aware that as a new institution we face challenges not found at other, more established colleges of medicine. We take actions daily to meet those challenges and meet the needs of our students, faculty and the citizens of our state and region. We are also aware of the need for additional opportunities for students to fulfill their goals and ambitions by attending medical school and obtaining an Osteopathic medical degree along with the need for increased access to quality and timely healthcare in the nation, region and state. These were and remain the driving forces behind the establishment of the college and university.
We are acutely aware that our students, by accepting an offer to attend Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine, are expressing confidence in themselves as well as confidence in the administration and faculty of the college; confidence that the college will be successful in providing the resources that are required to not only exceed the professional and educational standards established by their peers, but also the opportunity and resources needed to meet their individual educational and professional goals in spite of the absence of a “track record” to support their decision.
We are proud that a prevalent character trait demonstrated by the students that we have recruited and accepted is a strong commitment to service; we believe you when you express to us your desire to improve the health and wellness of communities and citizens in Colorado and the surrounding region as well as throughout the United States. Your ambitions and goals are matched to our mission of providing community-based physicians to meet the healthcare needs of under served populations in this state and region.
We are aware that many of you are from the same rural and under served settings that you desire to serve. We are aware that in your desire to fulfill your personal ambitions, many of you have faced significant challenges in your past and have more challenges looming in the future.
We know that not the least of your challenges in meeting your goals is the financing of your education and the uncertainty of future costs.
There are many things, including the current state of the credit market, that are out of the control of the university. There are actions, however, that we can take to assist our students.
By action of the board of trustees: Every student who matriculates at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in the inaugural class of 2008, shall have their tuition remain consistent and not be subject to inflationary adjustments throughout the student's four years of enrollment at the COM.
Historically, over the past several years, inflation at private colleges of medicine on the average has been in excess of 6.5% annually and even higher at state supported colleges of medicine. If this type of historical trend remains consistent, the policy established by Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine will represent an average of $11,000 savings to each student matriculating at the college.
Through this action, I believe that the college is taking positive, proactive action to not only offset a significant portion of the expense of your medical education but also to demonstrate to each of you our commitment to advancing your personal goals and ambitions as well as those of the university and college.
If you have questions or need additional information, do not hesitate to contact either myself, Melinda Smith, Julie Rosenthal, or any member our staff or administration.
Again, congratulations on your acceptance. We look forward to seeing you in July!
