A board-certified osteopathic family physician, Dr. Martin is a 1974 graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma University College of Pharmacy. After practicing as a hospital and clinical pharmacist for two years in Oklahoma, he matriculated at Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery and is a 1979 graduate of the now Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery (OSUCOM). He completed his post graduate training through the Rural Consortium of Enid Regional Hospital and the Tulsa Regional Hospital.

Dr. Martin enjoyed a full-scope osteopathic family medicine and clinical education practice in Enid, Oklahoma for 17 years, and in Tulsa, Oklahoma for two years before leaving active practice in 1999 to pursue a career in medical education full-time, assuming the position as the Chairperson of the Department of Family Medicine at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. He became Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSUCOM) in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 2001, and was promoted to the Associate Dean for Medical Education at that institution in 2003.

As a medical educator, Dr. Martin has delivered hundreds of educational programs to physicians, pharmacists and nurses throughout his 30-plus year professional career, ranging from educational presentations to students and residents to presentations at state, national and international educational forums. He has been actively involved in the development of innovative educational programs and curriculum at both the predoctoral and postdoctoral level. His is proud that he has had the opportunity to serve as a mentor for students at all professional levels.

Throughout his career, Dr. Martin has been active and involved with the osteopathic profession, serving in leadership positions for multiple associations with the goals of advancing the osteopathic profession, providing public service to the citizens of his state and the nation on numerous governmental, philanthropic and public organizations, councils, committee’s and boards. Dr Martin feels honored to have been allowed to represent his colleagues on numerous local, state and national professional associations as well. In his career he has served as the President of the OSUCOM Alumni Association, the Oklahoma State Chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association. In addition to serving on the Boards of the professional associations in Oklahoma where he eventually advanced to the Presidency, Dr. Martin has served on the Boards of the Iowa Osteopathic Association as well as the Florida Society of Osteopathic Family Physicians and currently serves on the Colorado Society of Osteopathic Medicine as the SecretaryTreasurer.

Dr. Martin was elected to the Board of Governors of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians in 2000. After serving as a Governor for three years and as the Tresurer of the Board for an additional three years, he is serving as President for the 2008-2009 term.

Active athletically throughout his life, as he “matured” Dr. Martin became progressively more interested and involved in politics and health policy. Dr. Martin completed a Health Policy Fellowship in 1995 and has used that knowledge and experience to actively work for efforts to advance the recognition of osteopathic medicine, osteopathic family medicine and promote improvements in the health care system of the United States as well as the health of our nation’s patients. He is an active participant in the development of policy as well as the political process. He is a frequent presence at both state and national legislative and regulatory agencies.

Dr. Martin is currently serving as the Vice President of Academic Affairs for Rocky Vista University and as the founding Dean of Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Martin married Sherri L. (Hitchcock) Martin in 1968 and they have three children of whom they are very proud. They are; R. Shawn Martin, the Director of Government Relations for the American Osteopathic Association, Natasha N. Bray, D.O., Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, NSUCOM and Amanda D. Martin-Askeland, D.O., a fourth year orthopedic resident at University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey.
